Night Walk was written in February 2012 on the Wayfarers Australia world tour. Three of us young composers challenged one another to write a choral piece by the end of the month. It was stipulated that the composition be ‘about nature’.

I was inspired by a walk in the suburbs of Canberra (the ‘bush capital’). There was a path behind my hosts’ house leading down to an oval where I could see houses spread out in a valley, twinkling lights shimmering at night. On this particular walk there was very little sound and everything felt very tense and still... or did I carry that mood with me?

In Night Walk I tried to capture the tension I felt, along with occasional flashes of happier feelings or thoughts. It is my first significant choral work.

Silence
Not a sound in the bush
Nothing stirs, nothing moves
Not a breath of wind
The tension grows
As I walk through the bush, I imagine a sound
A streetlight behind me, the stars are ahead
And there before me, a shimmering city at night
Silence
The stars are watching, the city is cold
Nothing stirs
Far away, the sun ignites tiny flowers
And laughter beckons from windows
