Raphaela has been an inspirational figure in my life, and remains a very special friend to me. However, this was written when I was still getting to know her. The lyrics at the start reflect some of her creative and personal qualities, but for the most part I was going for a comfortable, joyful feel… the rhythmic use of her name suggested the bass line, which in turn suggested an African-chorus style. At that time the choir sang a few African songs, and I saw an opportunity for music that conjured up similar emotions of gladness and 'singing praises', in this case Raphaela's praises. I used a lot of solo high notes because I knew she liked singing high.
